Rather than a whole insect, this plate shows a male gnat at magnification, with separate views of its head and two smaller gnats beside it. It is plate 32 from *Bybel der natuure*, the Dutch edition of the work of Jan Swammerdam, the Leiden naturalist whose microscope studies of insects were largely published after his death in 1680. Herman Boerhaave edited the volumes, which appeared in 1737 and 1738, so the engravings record observations made decades earlier. Swammerdam's precise drawings of insect anatomy helped make entomology a visual science.
