The engraving shows the moment the Union navy pressed its advantage on the Mississippi. In late April 1862, Admiral David Farragut's fleet ran past the Confederate forts below the city and demanded its surrender, and when Mayor John T. Monroe refused, Union forces moved in and took New Orleans within days. Samuel Sartain's engraving, made after a drawing by F.B. Schell, reflects the wartime demand for images of such events, which illustrated periodicals provided to northern readers eager to follow the war's turning points.
