The landing this sketch shows is the La Fourche packet landing, where riverboats serving Bayou La Fourche tied up along the New Orleans levee. Those packets carried passengers and freight between the city and the sugar parishes to the west, so the waterfront was a busy point of exchange. The scene was engraved in wood by Kilburn and published on July 22, 1871, in the weekly *Every Saturday*, which ran illustrated sketches of American cities during the years after the Civil War. The print offers a view of how the levee worked as a commercial edge of the city in the early Reconstruction era.
