Titled with a term now recognized as a demeaning stereotype, this Arnold Genthe photoprint is one of the portraits he made of African American residents in New Orleans, a city that drew him for its streets, markets, and mixed cultures in the early twentieth century. Genthe, a German-born photographer who worked in San Francisco and New York, is best known for his street and portrait studies, and his New Orleans images are now studied alongside the racial attitudes of their time. The caption card records no date, so the picture is best understood within the broader body of his work. Viewers should consider the title's language alongside the sitter's presence in the frame.
