This negative is catalogued under the names of Douglas Haig, the British commander on the Western Front, and John J. Pershing, who led the American Expeditionary Forces in France, though the record gives no date and the title is unverified. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from a news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so a group image like this one probably illustrated wartime coverage of Allied leadership. Because the other men are unnamed, the identifications are best treated as a starting point to check against the original caption cards.
