Lansdowne is the name on this glass negative, which the Bain News Service recorded from its caption cards, though the record notes that the identification has not been verified. If the sitter is the naval officer Zachary Lansdowne, the portrait would date to the early 1920s, when he commanded the Navy's rigid airship Shenandoah. That ship broke apart in a storm over Ohio in September 1925, killing Lansdowne and thirteen others. The Bain agency, a New York photo service active from about 1900 through the 1920s, supplied newspapers with pictures like this one, so the collection preserves many of the faces in the news of that era.
