Rather than a view of the Blue Ridge itself, this halftone reproduces a painting by Frederic Remington, the illustrator best known for scenes of the American West, and its caption card points to mountain men, the trappers and frontiersmen of the early 1800s. F.H. Wellington engraved the plate, which ran in the November 1901 issue of *Century Magazine* on page 93, when halftone reproduction had made magazine illustration a common way to carry paintings to a wide readership. The title and subject labels come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the scene is best read as Remington's interpretation of frontier life rather than a documented record of a specific place.
