The gateway in question stands at the entrance to Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, a burial ground that became a practical part of the battle's aftermath. Its stone gate and iron fencing belong to the years after the fighting, when the town's cemetery was expanded and its grounds were used to bury soldiers in the weeks that followed the battle. The gate's location on the town's edge, close to the ridges where the second day's fighting raged on July 2, 1863, helps explain why it appears so often in photographs of the area. Look at the gate's construction and the open approach beyond it to see how the grounds looked when visitors first came to pay respects to the dead.
