The gateway in this view belongs to the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg, the burial ground laid out after the battle of July 1863 to hold the Union dead. Dedicated in November 1863, the cemetery is where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address a few months after the fighting ended. The entrance and its stonework are often overlooked next to the rows of graves and the monuments inside, yet they mark the threshold where visitors first pass into the ground that gave the speech its setting.
