Few images capture the mechanics of Black voter registration in the Jim Crow South as directly as this one, which shows people in Atlanta registering to vote around 1944. That year the U.S. Supreme Court decided *Smith v. Allwright*, striking down the white primary, a practice that had kept Black Southerners from meaningful participation in Democratic primaries, which often decided elections in the region. Georgia still used poll taxes and other barriers, so registration drives like this one were a frontline effort. The NAACP, whose records hold this print, organized and documented many such campaigns.
