Few pictures in this set show Du Bois standing alone at full length, and this one was taken in Atlanta, Georgia, after an awards ceremony in 1920. The Spingarn Medal, created by the NAACP in 1914, recognized outstanding achievement by African Americans, and Du Bois, a sociologist and historian who edited the organization's magazine, *The Crisis*, was among the most visible figures in that movement. Photographs from NAACP events of this period document the organization's public campaign for civil rights and its effort to promote Black achievement against a backdrop of segregation and racial violence.
