The cell block pictured here belongs to the Atlanta Penitentiary, a federal prison in Georgia that opened in 1902 as one of the first institutions of its kind run by the national government. Views from its early years document a new system of federal incarceration. The print was made by Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures of the 1900s and 1910s cover many subjects across the country. The caption data is old and unverified, so the date of about 1910 is an estimate.
