The airship in this picture is the ZR-3, a Navy rigid airship that the service later commissioned as USS Los Angeles. Built by the Zeppelin company in Germany and delivered to the United States as a reparations payment, it reached Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 1924. Ground crews guided these enormous craft into their hangars by hand with long handling lines, and the scene shows the scale of that work. The ZR-3 served as a training and experimental vessel for the Navy's rigid airship program through the 1930s.
