Few aerial views from 1909 survive in this form, and this one looks down on Atlantic City, the New Jersey resort that had grown up along the Atlantic shore since the 1850s. The vantage point came from an airship, one of the early dirigibles that were then being tested for observation and passenger flights, so the picture captures the town from a height that few people had yet experienced. Its panoramic format stretches the view wide across the boardwalk, hotels and street grid. Viewers today can read it as both a record of a booming seaside city and an early document of how aircraft changed the way people saw landscapes.
