Its title sets the terms: an Englishman's only road runs through darkness and fighting toward triumph, a phrase that presents enlisting as the way out of ruin. The subjects attached to this 1915 color lithograph pair recruiting with war damage and ruins in England, a link that reflected real fear that year, when German warships shelled coastal towns such as Hartlepool, Scarborough and Whitby and Zeppelins began bombing English targets. Posters like this one belonged to Britain's voluntary recruiting drive, which ran before conscription was introduced in 1916. It is worth noticing how the message asks viewers to connect the fighting overseas with the destruction at home.
