Oil City sits where Oil Creek meets the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania, and this bird's-eye view shows the town as it looked in 1896, a few decades after oil was first struck nearby at Titusville in 1859. T. M. Fowler and James B. Moyer produced many such perspective maps of American towns in the late nineteenth century, drawing streets, rail lines and major buildings from an imagined elevated vantage point. Because the town's fortunes rose and fell with the oil trade, its streets, refineries and river landings reveal how closely the settlement depended on petroleum.
