Arlington Street Bridge crosses the lagoon near the western edge of the Public Garden, and this oblique angle shows how its ornate lamp standards frame the water and the paths beyond. The garden opened in the 1830s as one of the first public botanic gardens in the United States, and its winding paths and water features were designed for leisurely walking. Swan boats have glided across the lagoon since the 1870s, so the bridge has long served strollers and boat riders alike. The decorative ironwork reflects the Victorian taste for ornament in public structures.
