Edison stands beside a flag presented by Ediphone distributors to mark forty-three years since the invention behind the Ediphone, a dictating machine that grew out of his phonograph work of the late 1870s. The occasion honored one of his more practical inventions, which let office workers record letters and memos on wax cylinders instead of taking shorthand. Taken around 1920, the portrait shows Edison in his seventies, by then a celebrated figure whose laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey, had produced more than a thousand patents.
