Catalogued as no. 2949 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives, this lithograph was published in New York around 1876, when the firm was producing large numbers of seasonal sheets for a broad public. Its color was applied by hand over the printed outlines, a process that gave each sheet slightly different tones and made hand-colored prints more costly than plain ones. New Year greetings were a popular subject, since families and friends exchanged cards and visits at the turn of the year, and sheets like this were bought to display or to send as wishes for good fortune in the months ahead.
