A shoeshine stand on a New York City street, busy on the Jewish New Year in September 1905, is what sets this picture apart from other street scenes of the period. Bain News Service, the photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, made the image, and its catalog card links it to the holiday and to the city's Jewish community. Shoeshiners and street peddlers were a familiar sight in immigrant neighborhoods, where many young men and boys ran small businesses on the sidewalk. The caption data was transcribed from old cards and is unverified, so treat the exact location as approximate.
