Few holiday scenes from the First World War were taken so close to the fighting as this one, which shows American Red Cross workers handing out gifts on New Year's Day 1918 at Monte Grappa, in northeastern Italy. After the Italian army's retreat from Caporetto in late 1917, the mountain became a key defensive position, and the soldiers holding it spent the winter in exposed trenches. Small comforts like these gifts meant a great deal to men far from home in such conditions.
