Outcault's New Year's morning scene from Ryan's Arcade shares its Journal page with R. Dirks's "The Bicyclist's Revenge," which stars the Katzenjammer Kid, a mischievous character Dirks had introduced only weeks earlier. Both strips ran in the New York Journal's Sunday edition of December 26, 1897, as Hearst's paper competed hard for readers with color comic pages. The subjects listed for the print, hangovers, roller skating, and cycling, reflect the holiday revelry and the wheel and skate fads of the decade. The color is worth noticing, since multicolor printing was still a novelty on newspaper pages at the time.
