This 1907 New York photograph shows children and adults at Rosh ha-Shanah, the Jewish New Year, with a prayer shawl and a Bible visible among the observances. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of a New York news photography service that recorded city life in the early twentieth century. Rosh ha-Shanah opens the High Holy Days in early autumn, a season of synagogue services and personal reflection, and by the 1900s New York's Jewish immigrant communities had built a rich religious life of their own. The picture is worth a close look for how it records that devotion within a crowded and rapidly changing city.
