Its title, *1918 Opfertag*, translates roughly as "Day of Sacrifice," and this color lithograph poster was made by the artist Walter Ditz during the last year of the First World War. The subject headings link it to German commemoration of the war dead and to the monuments and memorials that spread across the country during the 1910s. Posters like this one were used to channel public mourning and national feeling at a time when casualties were enormous and the war's outcome was still uncertain. The Library of Congress holds it through the Rehse-Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German collection devoted to contemporary history and the press.
