Walter Ditz's color lithograph *1918 Opfertag* takes its title from the German word for a day of sacrifice, a theme that ties it directly to the war dead. Printed in Munich by Dr. C. Wolf und Sohn, this 124 by 90 centimeter poster is catalogued under commemoration of World War I and under monuments and memorials, the public rituals through which Germany honored its fallen. By 1918, casualty lists were long and the home front was under strain, and posters like this one asked civilians to direct their attention and support toward soldiers who had died and the families they left behind.
