Baliuag, a town in Bulacan province north of Manila, is the setting here, and this building once served as the headquarters of Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipino leader who proclaimed independence in June 1898. By 1899 the United States and the Philippine republic were at war, and American forces were moving north through central Luzon, occupying buildings that Aguinaldo's government had used. The photograph comes from an album documenting the campaign of General Henry Ware Lawton, the U.S. Army officer who led many of these operations and was killed near San Mateo in December 1899. Its record places it on page 7, so it belongs to a sequence of images tracing his movements.
