The title, "The harmony of courtship," puns on Felix Mendelssohn's *Songs Without Words*, a set of piano pieces that was widely played in middle-class parlors, and the record pairs courtship with the piano. The card was made in New York by the American Stereoscopic Company around 1903. Stereographs like this one were paired photographs viewed through a stereoscope to produce a three-dimensional effect, and they were a popular home entertainment in the early 1900s. Sentimental genre scenes of courtship, often staged, were a favorite subject, and this card shows how the piano served as a social setting for romance in that period.
