Plate 6 from Eadweard Muybridge's *Animal Locomotion* shows a nude figure captured in the act of walking, one of the sequence studies that set this work apart from ordinary figure photography. Muybridge made these images with banks of cameras triggered in quick succession, a method he had developed in the 1870s to settle questions about how bodies move. The plates were gathered into a published volume in 1887, and this collotype reproduction reflects how the studies were printed and circulated to artists, scientists and the public. It is worth looking closely at the sequence of poses, which reveals movements the eye cannot follow at normal speed.
