Five separate sheets make up this panorama, and only the center section is printed on silver printing-out paper; the others are albumen. Attributed to the photographer Francis Hacker and dated around 1879, the set was made to be laid side by side into one wide view of Washington. Its record lists roads, government buildings and railroad stations among its subjects, capturing a capital still growing after the Civil War and shaped by its federal institutions. Numbers printed on each section show the order in which the pieces join.
