An American Red Cross volunteer group is shown at work turning printed books into braille, the raised-dot reading system used by people who are blind. The caption card dates the picture only as ca. 191-, which points to the 1910s, a period when the Red Cross recruited volunteers for braille transcription, much of it aimed at servicemen who had lost their sight. Braille copying was slow, hand-done labor, and each volume could take many hours to produce, which made organized volunteer groups especially valuable. The date and details come from an old, unverified caption card.
