A pen-and-ink drawing titled "Disgusted with life, she retired to the society of books" sets a wry tone from the start. It appeared in the October 1888 issue of *Harper's Young People*, a weekly that Harper & Brothers published in New York from 1879 to 1894 for young readers. The magazine's mix of serial stories, puzzles, and comic illustrations was typical of the period, when reading was a common family pastime, and its audience would have readily understood the joke of retreating into books.
