It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of current events. Its glass negatives, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were the everyday tools of early press photography, when each plate had to be developed and printed quickly to meet deadlines.
