Bodie is a former gold-mining town on the high desert east of the Sierra Nevada in California, and this glass negative is one of the many views of the place made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers. Bodie boomed after gold was found there in 1859, reached a population of several thousand by the early 1880s, and was largely abandoned after the mines played out in the early 20th century. The record gives no date or photographer, so the image is best read as a document of the town's weathered streets and buildings during its years as a ghost town, when visitors and writers were beginning to treat it as a curiosity.
