The caption names Java and a cargo of plumbago, a term that in older usage often meant graphite, though the title comes from unverified Bain caption data and the date is not recorded. Bain News Service, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain around 1899, sold news photographs of ships, ports and commerce to newspapers, and its glass negatives document the trade that linked Java and the wider Dutch East Indies to Western markets. Worth noticing is how a plain commodity caption turns a small glass plate into a record of ordinary cargo work along the waterfront.
