Presque Isle, in northern Maine's Aroostook County, was a farming and trading town in 1894, when potatoes were the region's leading crop and most local fortunes rose or fell with the harvest. The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was pushing its lines through the county in the 1890s, giving growers a way to ship their crops south to wider markets. Lumber and farm supplies moved through the same streets, and the town's merchants, churches and schools served the surrounding farm families. This 1894 view records the village at a moment when rail and potato money were reshaping its main streets.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Presque Isle, Maine, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
