Peaks Island, in Casco Bay a few miles off Portland, Maine, was in 1886 a place with two seasons. Through the winter its year-round residents, many of them fishermen and farm families, kept to the harbor work and small fields that had supported the island for generations. In summer, steamboats from Portland's wharves carried city families and day-trippers out to the island, and cottages and boarding houses rose along the shore to house them. Its hotels, bathing beaches, and views toward the forts guarding the harbor made it one of the most visited resorts in the bay. Visitors stepping off the boat that year would have known it chiefly as a cool escape from the heat and smoke of the mainland city.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Peaks Island, Maine, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
