In 1878, New Castle sat on the west bank of the Damariscotta River in Lincoln County, Maine, facing the village of Damariscotta across the tidal water. Shipbuilding, coastal trade, and lumber milling shaped daily life, and the river carried schooners loaded with lumber, lime, and farm goods toward Boston and other ports. The Knox and Lincoln Railroad had reached the Damariscotta area in 1871, linking the river towns to Rockland and the wider rail network, which helped the local economy hold its place after the peak years of wooden shipbuilding. Residents of both banks would have known the twin villages as a single working waterfront, where church steeples, wharves, and mill yards were the most familiar landmarks.
