Houlton, Maine, in 1894 was a farm and lumber town in the northern county of Aroostook, close to the Canadian border. Sawmills and woodworking shops on the Meduxnekeag River processed timber cut in the surrounding forests, and the potato fields that would later define the region's economy were expanding as rail links improved access to eastern markets. Residents still remembered the Aroostook War of 1839, when a boundary dispute between Maine and New Brunswick brought militia and troops to the area, and the town's position on that frontier shaped its civic life for decades. Churches, a courthouse, and schools anchored the village streets, and a town that depended on lumber and farming looked toward the railroad as the link to a wider world.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Houlton, Maine, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
