Gardiner and Pittston, two neighboring towns on opposite banks of the Kennebec River in Maine, appear together in this 1878 bird's-eye view. Gardiner's economy in the 1870s rested on the river's falls, which powered mills and workshops, while the Kennebec carried lumber and goods downstream toward Gardiner's wharves and the ports at the river's mouth. Pittston, across the water, was more rural, with farms and riverfront landings tied to the same trade. Both communities were still recovering from the upheaval of the Civil War and the economic strains that followed, and local life centered on churches, schools, and town meetings. Residents of the 1870s would have known the twin towns as working river communities, their fortunes linked by the bridges and ferries that crossed the Kennebec.
