Wilton, Maine, in 1895 was a mill and shop village in the hills of Franklin County, where farming families, woolen and shoe workers, and tradesmen shared a small downtown near the water. Local industry leaned on power from the streams that run down toward Wilton Pond, and factory work drew workers from surrounding farms. Rail lines had reached much of western Maine by then, letting manufactured goods leave the region and bringing summer visitors to the lakes. Residents of the 1890s would have known Wilton for its working mills, its churches and schools, and the steady rhythm of a town that depended on a few main employers.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Wilton, Maine, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
