Crowds gathering outside Grand Central in 1910 capture the station at a busy point in the year, with people returning to the city as the summer season ended. The depot then was the older Grand Central Depot on Forty-second Street, which was being rebuilt into the Beaux-Arts terminal that opened in 1913. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and the agency's notes attribute the crowd to summer vacationers coming home, a detail worth keeping in mind when reading the scene.
