The title "Grand Central Station" points to New York's Grand Central Terminal, which opened in 1913 as one of the busiest rail hubs in the country, though the Bain News Service supplied that title without independent verification. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, so the exact date and the precise spot in the building are still uncertain. Bain's staff made many such pictures for newspaper use, and large glass plates like this one captured fine architectural detail and the movement of crowds in the concourses. Viewers today can use it to study the station's design and the daily routines of travelers in its early years.
