This glass negative records Grand Central, the New York rail hub whose name the caption gives, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified data supplied by the Bain News Service. The terminal that stands in Midtown today opened in 1913, replacing an older depot on the same site, and its Beaux-Arts design and concourse made it one of the city's best-known public spaces. The Bain News Service was a working press agency, so its images were made to be sold and reproduced in newspapers and magazines. Glass plates of this size were common in that era and give a sharp view of the building's architecture and the crowds it drew.
