This picture belongs to a set of Boston baseball cards, so its particular interest lies in tying a small printed object to the city's teams. Cards like these were often issued as premiums in cigarette and tobacco packs or as trade cards, and many of the early examples featured players from the Boston Beaneaters and the Boston Americans, who were renamed the Red Sox in 1908. Collectors today value them as both sports memorabilia and everyday advertising from the early 1900s. Looking closely at the card's printing, typography and portrait style can reveal a good deal about how the game and its players were presented to the public at the time.
