Miners Mills, Pennsylvania, in 1892 was a small mill-and-mining village in the northern anthracite country of Luzerne County, where most working lives depended on coal taken from the hills and the railroads that carried it out. Men labored in the collieries and the breaker houses, while families lived in company-built rows close to the mills and the creek that powered them. The year was a tense one across the region's coalfields, as wage disputes and falling prices pressed hard on workers and owners alike. Residents would have known their town first by its mines and mill yards, and by the rail lines that linked it to the larger valley towns and the markets beyond.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Miner's Mills, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1892. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
