Pittston, Pennsylvania, in 1892 was a coal town in the Wyoming Valley of Luzerne County, where the Susquehanna River runs past the anthracite fields. Mining, along with the breakers, railroad sidings, and the mine-related trades that supported them, set the rhythm of daily life, and many residents were immigrant families from Ireland, Wales, and other parts of Europe who worked underground or in the shops that served the collieries. The valley had been battered by the great Susquehanna flood of 1889, and in the early 1890s townspeople were still rebuilding bridges, streets, and businesses along the river. A map like this one would have been read locally as a record of that effort, showing the churches, schools, mills, and commercial blocks that made Pittston a borough of residents who knew it first as a place of coal and hard work.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Pittston, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1892. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
