Plains, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1892, was a mining community on the edge of Wilkes-Barre in Luzerne County, in the heart of the anthracite coal country of the Wyoming Valley. Its working life revolved around the collieries and the miners' company houses that clustered near them, and the men who went underground came from a mix of Welsh, Irish, English, and newer Eastern and Southern European families. Farms and small householders still held much of the land between the pits, so the town looked different from the dense streets of Wilkes-Barre just beyond it. Residents in 1892 knew their home mainly by its coal, its church congregations, and its rail and road links to the valley's larger city. The valley's economy rose and fell with the coal trade, and the lean years that followed in the mid-1890s would test the same families.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Plains, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1892. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
