Moosic, a small community in Lackawanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania, sat in the anthracite coal country that shaped the region in 1892. Its residents lived close to the mines, breakers, and rail lines that moved coal out of the valley, and many worked in those industries or in the nearby city of Scranton, whose iron works and silk mills drew workers from across the valley. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad ran through the district, tying local collieries to eastern markets and bringing a steady flow of immigrant miners from Wales, Ireland, Germany, and Eastern Europe. In 1892 the valley's towns were still growing on the strength of coal, and the hillsides and company houses on a map like this one would have been familiar to anyone who worked the pits.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Moosic, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1892. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
