Few details survive about the sitter beyond the title, which gives his name and home state, New York, as recorded on the negative sleeve. The date of about 1923 is inferred from other negatives in the same range, so it is an estimate. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., produced many portraits and news pictures in the early 1900s, often for newspaper use, and glass plates like this one were the standard medium of that era. The record also notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are visible traces of the plate's age.
