The sitter is recorded only by a title, "Earl of Middleton," which a National Photo Company clerk wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress notes that this attribution is unverified. The picture is dated February 24, 1923, from a related negative in the same series. The National Photo Company operated in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century and made large numbers of portraits and news pictures of visiting dignitaries and public figures. The glass plate itself shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which are worth noticing when judging the image.
